Sleep Solutions

When you’re getting ready for the arrival of your new baby, top of the shopping list is highly likely to be something for them to sleep in!  But, as with all things Nursery related, there is a huge amount of choice out there for you to select from, each product having their respective features and benefits.  So, we’ve pulled together a simple guide to help you de-mystify the range of sleep solutions out there, whether it’s a sleep positioner, a baby nest, a cot wedge, a snuzzler or a sleeper.

Sleep Positioner

What is it?

A sleep positioner is intended to keep baby in a specific position while sleeping.  It typically features raised supports attached to each side of a mat to elevate baby’s head, and straps or a wedge to hold baby in place.

What’s it good for?

It helps support baby on their back, which is advised as the safest sleep position for babies.  However, sleep positioners have received safety and suffocation concerns from the US FDA (Food and Drug Administration).

Age suitability:

Birth to approximately 4 months (or when baby is showing signs of being able to roll over unaided)

Other important info:

The Lullaby Trust (a cot death charity which advises the NHS) do not recommend using a sleep positioner stating that ‘babies shouldn’t lie on or have anything soft around them, particularly their heads, as this can increase the chance of overheating.’

The US FDA have also recently advised that sleep positioners ‘can cause suffocation that can lead to death’.

Summer Infant do not currently offer sleep positioners.

Baby Nest

What is it?

A baby nest is typically a mattress with high sides. Unlike sleep positioners, a baby nest is a non-restrictive sleep surface which offers a cosy area for your little one.

What’s it good for?

It can help to cushion baby’s startle reflex to prevent them waking up and can provide a more comfortable night’s sleep with baby positioned on their back.  Several baby nests available in the market are also suitable for tummy time during the day.

Age suitability:

Birth to approximately 6 months (age suitability varies between manufacturers)

Other important info:

Baby nests are not included within the sleep positioners US FDA safety concerns; however, the Lullaby Trust still states that baby nests do not meet the safe sleeping guidelines it promotes.

Summer Infant do not currently offer baby nests.

Cot Wedge

What is it?

A cot wedge is for use underneath a mattress to gently elevate baby’s head and torso.  Unlike sleep positioners and baby nests, a cot wedge is not a sleep support and is not directly in contact with baby.

What’s it good for?

It aids easier breathing, better digestion and helps to reduce reflux for a more restful night’s sleep.

Age suitability:

Birth and up

Other important info:

Cot wedges are not included within the sleep positioners US FDA safety concerns.

Snuzzzler

What is it?

A snuzzler provides head and body support to help keep baby snug and comfortable in a car seat, pushchair, stroller or bouncer.  Unlike the other sleep solutions above, a snuzzler is not intended for use in a sleeper or cot.

What’s it good for?

It provides support to baby’s head when they’re sleeping on-the-go. Snuzzlers are ideal for use when travelling to ensure baby is comfortable during daytime naps.

Age suitability:

Birth and up

Other important info:

Snuzzlers are not included within the sleep positioners US FDA safety concerns.

Sleeper

What is it?

A sleeper is a standalone infant bed which is smaller in size than a cot.

What’s it good for?

It offers a safe alternative to bed sharing and allows you to keep baby close whilst following safe sleeping guidelines.  A sleeper is especially beneficial for breastfeeding and C-section mums.

Our Summer Infant By Your Bed Sleeper also offers the added benefit of an adjustable incline to elevate baby’s head, to aid improved sleep through easier breathing and better digestion.  The By Your Bed Sleeper features adjustable height options allowing parents to keep baby by their side at eye level and manual side to side rocking for parents to soothe baby from the comfort of their bed.

Age suitability:

Birth to approximately 5 months (or when baby is showing signs of being able to pull up and sit unaided)

Other important info:

Sleepers support the Lullaby Trust guidelines which state that ‘the safest place for your baby to sleep is on his back, on his own sleep surface, in the same room as you’.
